Rainblock®: Circular water storage

The Rainblock® project is one of the Circular Chain projects The Compound Company has partnered in. In this project, we collaborated with various companies in the value chain to develop and prove that Rainblock® can be produced with a new compound based on recycled plastic feed stock, the EcoForte PCR recyclate. This new compound minimizes the carbon footprint by replacing imported prime fossil-based polymers.

The Rainblock® project is focused on tackling water problems (short, heavy rain showers and long periods of drought), a joint responsibility of citizens, companies, governments, and institutes. The Rainblock® application is used to capture rainwater in periods of high rainfall and make use of it during drier periods.

The Rainblock® is a hollow water storage element that can store 165 L of water in each module. The technology is designed in a scaleable way so that you can use multiple modules, providing a rainwater solution based on the user’s needs.

Sustainable application, with sustainable materials

In this circular chain project®, we have developed a recyclate compound to produce Rainblocks® via a rotational molding process for commercial use. Important properties for the Rainblock® included the survival of a drop test, 2 bar airtightness, a smooth surface, resistance to frost, heat and UV.

HDPE PCR compound for rotational molding

The converter of the Rainblock® preferred to change as few settings as possible to the existing product from virgin plastic. To make this work different materials have been evaluated based on polymer purity and Melt Flow Index (MFI). The purity has been determined based on the novel MADSCAN technology of Veridis. After thorough testing and many lab analysis, the material chosen was HDPE PCR (post consumer recyclate) MFI within range of injection molding rotation molding. By adding additives for stabilization and a slight modification package, this resulted in a unique EcoForte compound. This recyclate has the desired properties and can be used in a rotomolding process.

Different fields of expertise result in optimized design ideal

Chain partners in this project were De Grondstoffendienst, Veridis, Stiphout Plastics, Water2Keep, DM&P, Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland and The Compound Company. Working together in close relation in a chain project, unites different experts and different fields of expertise. This resulted in the optimal balance in material, design, processing and application use. This is a perfect example of a sustainable application where cross-functional collaboration led to an optimized design ideal.
