Compounding is usually carried out by extrusion. Co-kneaders and twin screws (co- and counter rotating) as well internal mixers are the most common used compounders in the plastic industry. The raw materials and additives are fed via a hopper to the beginning of the machine. The screw itself is confined in a barrel that has different zones that can be heated according to the resin’s properties. The materials are melt-blended by rotating screw(s) and gradually transported towards the die. Upon exiting the die, the compound is cooled to solidify the polymers by passing the material through a water bath or using air cooling.
To enhance the mechanical properties, improve compatibility between different polymers and optimize the product performance, various additives like compatibilizers, impact modifiers and chain extenders can be incorporated into the process.
Additives and plastic compounds used for compounding
The Compound Company offers multiple Yparex and EcoForte additives and plastic compounds as a raw material for the compounding process, such as compatibilizers with adhesion to materials like PP, aluminium, PE, natural fibres, impact modifiers and PET or PLA based chain extenders. For sustainable applications we also have bio-based compatibilizers for compounding.
